Meet the Winemakers Barnaby Tuttle Winemaker Barnaby Tuttle is a native Portlander, a rarity these days. He grew up in the Hollywood/Grant Park area of Northeast Portland. He graduated from Benson High School with a focus in plastics and auto mechanics. This training came in quite handy later in his life. Barnaby started working when he was just 12 years old as a dish washer at Papa Haydn restaurant in Southeast Portland. After a few years of suds, he worked his way up to baking cakes, then cooking. He left for a few years for other jobs, then came back to Papa Haydn in 2003 to work as general manager and wine steward. During his tenure there, he developed an insatiable passion for wine and, after meeting German wine importer Ewald Moseler, he became obsessed with esoteric cool-climate wines. Mr. Moseler's unique German wine catalogue flipped a switch for Barnaby. He realized he wanted to immerse his career in wine for the rest of his life. In early spring 2005, Barnaby and his wife, Olga, were presented with the opportunity to plant a small vineyard on a friend's property in Alsea, Oregon. Alsea is west of Oregon's coast range and only 22 miles from the Pacific Ocean. They took a gamble, planting Oregon's first coastal vineyard. The first years were quite challenging, as they learned some valuable lessons, but they remained true to their goal—to grow fruit in a cool climate to produce wines that are German and Alsatian in style. Their first crop in 2008 produced two barrels of Pinot Noir which became available in Oregon in November 2009. Barnaby worked as the assistant winemaker at Laurel Ridge Winery in Carlton, Oregon, for two years before moving off on his own to form Teutonic Wine Company with Olga. |
Meet the Winemakers Olga Tuttle Olga is not a native Oregonian like her husband Barnaby. A native of the East Coast, she grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, and graduated from Pace University in New York with a bachelor's degree in psychology. She worked for several record companies and always thought she would live in "The City." Little did she know that she would end up in Oregon, pruning vines in the rain and learning about the rules and regulations of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission. Olga wears many hats at Teutonic Wine Company. While she assists Barnaby in the winery and in the vineyard, her main focus is marketing, sales and compliance. Olga's other passion is helping animals. She has volunteered for several animal organizations including the Oregon Humane Society and the Animal Rescue and Care Fund and served as one of the first members of the board of directors for Fences For Fido.
